Kambala is a corner race popular in coastal Karnataka districts. Kambala is a wonderful sports and entertainment event for the villagers and tourists and photographers also witness the Kambala with enthusiasm.

Carpet Details:

BUFFALO: The buffalo owners and farmers of this region take great care of their horns and some of them are fed specially for rugs with salali good food, oil massage. During a carpet run, the corners are usually driven in pairs, which are controlled using a plow and a rope. The best carpet angles can cover a 140 meter run in less than 12 seconds. The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India has issued several guidelines to ensure that carpet corners are not harmed, tortured or otherwise disturbed. These guidelines are strictly followed during the carpet season.

Race Track: A paddy field is prepared for a carpet race. The carpet is run on two parallel race tracks, which are filled with mud.

Rider: The angle of the blanket is controlled by a man with a keel. This runner stands on a wooden board and whips the plow and the horns to splash as much muddy water as possible during the race.

Race: Two teams of buffaloes and their jockeys (controller/sheep) run towards the target on two parallel race tracks. The race will be held throughout the day. The winner will qualify for the next round. Along with reaching the target, prizes are awarded to those who splash water up to the stick tied above.

Season: Kambala events begin after the paddy harvest, which usually takes place in the month of October. Kambala programs are held in different parts of Tulu Nad (Tulu speaking areas of South Kannada district) between November and March.

Most rug competitions last several hours/overnight and offer free entry.
